All Together - Completely Apart

Using large format film photography to explore the paradox of connecting through a medium, and share in moments of isolation.

It was loud but you’d never know it: From over the fence I could hear the roar of engines and a hungry crowd. There was a crackling voice shouting through a loudspeaker.  I could smell the gasoline, rubber, fried dough, and straw-packed mud beneath my feet. There was laughter and motion: flashing lights and chaos. Yet here I found something still as lake water on an early morning.  I know there’s a whole world of life and movement beneath the surface, but from here it looks like glass…or maybe more like a mirror. And what do I see from here amid this commotion? I see an empty place.  I see shadows that I try to hide in. I fail. I pass over walkways quickly and avoid eye contact. The demolition derby ends and the crowd pours out.  People shuffle by and shift glances but nothing more.  We sift in and out of one another: All together, and completely apart.  All together, and completely apart.

He laughed and asked her what they were.  She smiled and offered a sample.  Chewing, and nodding; he asked to buy a bag.  She winked at me.  She knew I was there behind the lens, and I wondered what it did to her.  I wonder what it does to me.

They were all open but this one, and as the cool air crept in I wondered if it ever would.  In a field of sunflowers, this was like a burnt pixel on a massive screen.  We spent some time together floating on the waves of the breeze: Two drifters in a cosmic sea.  I fixed my lens, and in the time it took to wait for stillness we bathed in the vibrations of each other's presence.
